Plan the Best Spring Break Staycation

relaxing on a staycation

Spring Break time is upon us. If you are one of the lucky ones heading out for a family adventure to parts unknown, or a least warm and sunny, then we bid you safe travels and happy trails….

But, if you have decided to stick around town, welcome to the Staycation party!

Rules for a Staycation

It’s still a vacation, even if you aren’t going anywhere, so to try to give yourself a break. Think about eliminating some (or all) of the following things from your usually hectic schedule:

  • cooking
  • cleaning
  • cell phone
  • alarm clock
  • house work
  • WORK (of any kind)
  • Laundry
  • Worrying (good luck!)

Now you have your DON’T list, let’s look at fun things TO DO around town.

Have Fun on a Staycation

  1. Go to the movies. Well, duh! Of course this is our number one fun thing to do!geocaching box on staycation
  2. Geocaching. Who doesn’t like a good treasure hunt? Don’t know what it is? Learn about Geocaching and then get out your GPS and go to it!
  3. Laser Tag. Get some friends together or another family and battle it out in the laser tag arena. Zap Zone in Delta Center and Spare Time in Frandor are two local locations for laser tag.
  4. Board Game Night. Have each family member pick their favorite game and take turns playing them. Or invite some other staycationers over and have an ultimate board game night!
  5. Tour a brewery. Craft breweries are popping up everywhere and Grand Rapids is just a short drive away. Sample some great Michigan beers, and the kids can have Root Beer!
  6. Try a new restaurant. Check out that new restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. (This helps with the NO COOKING rule!)bikeriding on a staycation
  7. Get the bikes out. This is a great time to pull the bikes out of the garage and get them all ready for the riding season. Wash ’em, pump up the tires, grease the chain, and take off! Maybe there is an ice cream parlor at the end of your ride–you never know!
  8. Take a hike. Spring is full of exciting things happening in nature. Get outside and breathe the fresh air and bring a camera. Check out a new trail or area.
  9. Take a nap. This is our favorite one. Do all the stuff listed above and then treat yourself to a nice long nap. Come on, you know you want to.

Tell us about your Staycation

We want to hear about your plans for staying around the area this Spring Break. Please comment below. See you at the movies!

Employee Appreciation and Team Building

Best Popcorn in Town!

The Best Popcorn in TownIt’s easy to be the best at something when you are the ONLY something!

Nevertheless, we still think we have the best popcorn at the Sun Theatre, and we know you do to, because you tell us all time.

best popcorn in town

There is just something delicious and special about movie theater popcorn that you just can’t duplicate at home in air poppers or on the stove.

$2 Tickets!

The Best Popcorn in TownDid you know that we keep our ticket prices at $2 so that EVERYONE in our great community and surrounding area can enjoy the experience of the movies? Well, we do! And, the price hasn’t gone up much since 1970. WOW! You can’t say that about anything else on that list.

We also rely on concession stand sales because the ticket price is so low. That is why it is important to buy your snacks and drinks from us when you visit our theater to support our business.

Now, we aren’t going to check your bags, or make you turn out your pockets, or invade your personal space and privacy. We are just politely asking you to keep doing what you have been doing and support us generously!

What Can You Bring to the Theatre?

Buy the best popcorn from us and bring in your own popcorn toppings. Shakers of flavor! We supply butter and salt, but there are so many ways to jazz up your popcorn. Mix your salty and your sweet and dump M&Ms or other candy into your popcorn. We sell that too!

Horrocks here in Delta Center has flavored popcorn toppings (shop local!)

You can also find several brands and flavors at many grocery stores too!

Just remember, please don’t bring any Hibachi grills or tailgating gear to the theatre. We like to keep it simple here!

Unique Local Christmas Gift Ideas

Unique Local Christmas Gift IdeasWhy Shop Local?

We have amazing hometown pride here in Grand Ledge. All you have to do is attend one of our many parades to see it. Or check out how many like we have on Facebook!

But there are more reasons for shopping local than just feeling good about supporting your community. When you buy local the money stays in the community.

But don’t take our word for it. Read this article in Time magazine for a more in-depth study.

What Should You Buy Local?

Sun Theatre Gift Certificates

Ok, you already know why you should buy local, but do you know WHAT you should buy local?

First, you can start with an annual pass to the Grand Ledge Sun Theatre. $50 for unlimited access to all of our movies. You probably know someone who would love this. Maybe you would love this! Click here for more info on all of our gift certificate options.

Ok, enough about us.

Grand Ledge Businesses

Click here for a complete list for all the local businesses that advertise with us. Maybe you’ll find someone on that list who has just what your loved one needs.

Take a walk down Bridge Street and explore ALL the other Grand Ledge businesses. Many of them offer gift certificates, custom and local products, experiences, and food and catering.

Keep reading for some unique Christmas gift ideas and then think, where can I buy these locally? We’d love to hear from you in the comments about what you came it up.

Give Experiences

Sure, they aren’t always as fun to unwrap, but sharing an experience and making memories has a much more lasting effect than a toy or item that is fun for awhile but easily forgotten.

Movies

At the top of our list of experiences is naturally, Movies! No surprise there. You can purchase an annual pass to the Sun Theatre for your favorite date (and one for yourself) and viola, instant date night any night of the week. We’ll see you at 7:15pm!

Trips and Weekend Getaways

It is always fun to have something to look forward to. Often times people feel a let down after the holidays are over, but giving the gift of a trip creates anticipation and planning that carries far beyond December 25th. Plus, it’s like giving a gift to yourself, because you get to go too!

Plan the Perfect Day

This can be the start of a great family tradition. Include the kids (or let them plan it on their own) and they will surprise you with their excitement and what they come up. Gift them a whole day to do exactly what they want to do as a family and keep it local (it’s only a day, so you don’t want to spend the majority of it traveling).

For example:

  • Make breakfast together. Menu: eggs, bacon, pancakesshop local
  • Take a walk around Downtown Grand Ledge
  • Eat lunch at a Grand Ledge restaurant
  • Go to a movie at the Sun Theatre
  • Visit Grandma and Grandpa
  • Make homemade pizzas at home
  • Snuggle up together while mom or dad reads a book out loud

Give Gift Certificates Wisely

Gift certificated andShop Local gift cards are a very easy and convenient way to give a gift. You can purchase them practically anywhere, they don’t require wrapping, and there isn’t usually easy to find one that you know someone will like. But there are a whole lot of unused gift cards floating around out there, so make yours count.

Here are some ways to make a gift card more meaningful:

  • Their absolute favorite place to eat
  • Something they would never spend money on themselves but have always wanted to
  • To the place you had your first date so you can recreate memories and make new ones
  • A new place that opened you’ve been dying to try
  • A place to indulge in a very special treat, with 2 forks!
  • An annual pass to business or organization that will get used over and over again
  • For music, art, or recreation lessons

Use Your TalentsShop Local

Everybody is good at something and everyone needs help with something. This type of gift can be one of the best because you are giving of your talent and your time, and not necessarily your money. Here are just a few ways you can give of yourself this year:

  • Prepare a homemade meal or bake a lovely dessert
  • A certificate for a night of babysitting for a young family
  • Clean someone’s house for them
  • Create something, write a poem, draw a picture, sew, make homemade ornaments.

The possibilities are endless.

Practical Gifts

These types of gifts are things that people don’t usually buy for themselves, but they need.

DADS, pay attention here!

  • Car emergency kit. Perfect for a teenage driver or child who has just moved out. You could throw in a lesson or two on car maintenance and changing a tire too!
  • Basic tool kit. Perfect for the new home owner.
  • First Aid kit. Something everyone should have. You could include one for the house and the car.
  • Dog/Cat goodie box. Create a box of treats, brushes and toys for the pet owner in your life. You can also include basic first aid items too~something every pet owner should have.

No matter who is on your list to give to this year, Grand Ledge businesses have something they will love!
